"Guan Yin · Listening to Time" pays tribute to the legendary Japanese composer, producer and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023) and his enduring artistic legacy. Part of his iconic "Installation Music" series, this work presents music in a three-dimensional form within the gallery, creating a dialogue with the album async.

Presented as a site-specific installation at the M+ Live venue, the centerpiece of the work is a giant LED screen. Visual composition created by Koji Takanaka draws inspiration from instruments, plants, books and other objects in Sakamoto’s studio.

Imagery emerges slowly from both sides of the screen, with pixels on the surface gradually turning into abstract horizontal lines before returning to their original state. Koji Takanaka’s visual effects do not synchronize with the sound but evolve continuously, constructing a parallel timeline within the piece. The music of async is played in multi-channel through high-precision speakers in the surround sound system, delivering an immersive auditory experience for visitors.
